Increased Provincial Funding for Public Libraries
Submitted by dean.frey on April 16, 2009 - 7:24am.
At 10:30 this morning (Thursday, April 16) the Premier and the Minister of Municipal Affairs will make an announcement about increases to Provincial funding for public libraries. We'll be watching the videoconference, and we'll post the recorded videoconference here when it's available.
I'll be posting to the Library's twitter account during the announcement - follow twitter.com/rdpl
Here is the official announcement:

I hope with this increased
I hope with this increased funding, that you will take the time to ask the community how it should be used. One thing that hasn't been changed in about 20 years is your hours of operation. The hours were cut back in the late 80's or early 90's, when library funding (all provincial funding) was cut. It would sure be nice to see those hours at least restored, or perhaps expanded?
I'm sure others in the community have suggestions on what they'd like to see - just ask us!
Re: hours of operation
You're right - we lost 1/2 hour in the mornings and 1/2 hour in the evenings at the Downtown Branch back in the late 1980s. We'll be looking at our hours of operation at the Dawe Branch before it opens next March. It's likely that most of the new money from the Province will go towards Dawe operations. We expect that we'll be much busier in a considerably larger library there, especially with significant new activity at the Dawe Centre.
As to the Downtown Branch, hours of operation will be in the mix as well when we plan for the 2010 budget and beyond.
Thanks for your feedback, and please, everyone, feel free to comment!
